380 StarKist Employees Laid Off In First Round

StarKist Co. began their endeavor to layoff nearly 800 workers this past weekend.

According to Brett Butler, the StarKist Samoa General Manager, The tuna fish supplier went through their first phase of layoffs on Saturday, handing the pink slip to 380 employees.

Butler went before the House Commerce Committee last Thursday to testify about the layoffs. StarKist announced the layoffs in May of this year, saying they would scale back cannery staff by the end of 2010.

In addition to rising costs for utilities and transportation, StarKist’s decision to hold layoffs also came as a result of federally mandated minimum wage increases.
