California, New York, Florida, New Jersey and Michigan were at the front of an ignominious list released on Wednesday. The list, released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, ranked of states by number of “mass layoff events.” A mass layoff event occurs when 50 or more employees from the same company file for unemployment within five weeks.
Each of the top five states had over 100 such events and California clocked in with a whopping 558, meaning at least 27,900 Californians lost their jobs as part of a mass layoff event in July. Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Alabama round out the top ten states on the list.
