Salt Lake’s The Deseret News Cuts More Than Half Of Staff

The Salt Lake City-based newspaper, The Deseret News, will layoff more than half of its staff as it prepares for a for the future of Newspapers.

The newspaper released what CEO Clark Gilbert is calling “a model for change.” They have a five-part plan that includes creating a cutting-edge digital team. Gilbert says that their plant will create one of “the most innovative new media companies in the country.”

The publication will also launch what they call Deseret Connect. The system will gather freelance writers to provide the newspapers with stories on a regular basis. The system will also organize the writers, as well as qualify, edit, and peer-review the content.
